Alumina-Zirconia-Silica, AZS, is the most widely used fused cast refractory. This material is characterized by a fine-grained body of crystalline zirconia and alumina in a silicate glassy phase matrix.
By specifying the zirconia content, the glass furnace can be zoned to optimize performance and cost. For example, Monofrax CS-5, with 40% zirconia, is used in the more aggressive areas of the furnace: doghouse and hot zone sidewalls, weir walls, electrode blocks, throat. Monofrax CS-3, with 34% zirconia, is used in the more typical applications: melter paving, sidewalls, superstructure; feeder channels, spouts, and furnace crown. Monofrax CS-4, with 36% zirconia, is used mostly in glass contact applications, such as sidewalls, where a balance between cost and performance is desired.
Monofrax AZS refractories are produced using a patented process that ensures maximum oxidation, hence superior performance in service.
